Indian chess grandmaster Gukesh D (Dommaraju Gukesh) is the second youngest person in the history of the world to win the Grandmaster award. Gukesh started playing chess at the age of 7. In the year 2019, he became the youngest Indian Grandmaster. In fact, he became the youngest Grandmaster in India, but he was only 17 days away from becoming the youngest Grandmaster in the world. He had won the Gold Medal in the Chess Olympiad in the same year. He is now only 16 years old.

Gukesh's mother is a microbiologist and his father is a surgeon. Their schedules were always busy. So they had to give less time to Gukesh. His father Rajinikanth, while talking to The Indian Express, said that usually when I used to pick him up from school, the problem was that I would reach there 15-20 minutes late after school. His mother had advised that he should be put into chess instead of other games. His mother further said that when it came to studies, he didn't have to say anything. He would study on his own. Which was really good for us. We also didn't want to be bothered by his mischievous behavior. Because when he did any school work, he would follow some rules. Ever since he started playing chess, his teachers used to praise him a lot. They used to say that Gukesh was playing well. Even though he was not taught to play chess, he played it well.


Gradually, Gukesh caught everyone's attention. When he won the Under-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championship in the year 2015. Then in the year 2018, he also won the World Youth Chess Championship. Gukesh won five gold medals at the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championship. He became an International Master at the 34th Open de Capelle La Grande Chess Tournament in France in March 2018. (Dommaraju Gukesh)

In 2019, he was set to become the world's youngest Grandmaster, surpassing Russia's Sergey Karjekin. However, he could not break that record as he was 17 days older than Sergey. He became India's youngest Grandmaster at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. While Sergey had won this award at the age of 12 years and 7 months.

On 16 October 2022, at the age of sixteen, he set a record of becoming the youngest player to defeat the then world champion Magnus Carlsen.
