National Farmers' Day is celebrated in India every year on 23 December. This day is also celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of the country. Chaudhary Charan Singh has done many works for the welfare of Indian farmers and agriculture, due to which he is also known as the 'farmer leader'.

What is the history of National Farmers' Day?
In 2001, the Government of India declared National Farmers' Day in honour of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. According to the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, National Farmers' Day was established in honour of Chaudhary Charan Singh, who served as the Prime Minister of India from 1979 to 1980. Chaudhary Charan Singh brought many policies for agriculture and the farming community during his tenure. His policies were entirely focused on land reforms, agricultural productivity and protection of farmers' rights. Even today, Chaudhary Charan Singh's policies and actions affect farmers and agriculture.
Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of India, was born on 23 December 1902 in a small village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. Chaudhary Charan Singh's family was associated with agriculture, so he was aware of the problems and rights of farmers from a young age. Chaudhary Charan Singh completed his graduation in science in 1923 and his postgraduate studies in 1925. Apart from his career as Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh also advocated for the rights of farmers.
Chaudhary Charan Singh initiated historic reforms like the Loan Waiver Bill in 1939. This bill freed farmers from exploitative moneylenders and provided an opportunity to bring policies that worked in the interest of farmers.
The fact that India is an agricultural country is not hidden from anyone. A majority of our country's population depends on agriculture and hence farmers and agriculture are considered the backbone of our country's economy. December 23 is dedicated to farmers. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to remind them of the important role of farmers in India's economy.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), one of the purposes of celebrating this day is to highlight government policies for farmers. The day also raises awareness about government initiatives such as subsidies, fair prices, crop insurance, climate change adaptation, sustainable farming practices and credit. On the occasion of National Farmers' Day, the government announces new policies and schemes for the improvement of the agriculture sector and the welfare of farmers.
