Justice (Retired) V. Ramasubramanian

The Central Government has appointed Justice (Retired) V. Ramasubramanian as the new Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). It is a nodal body that investigates human rights violations by the government or public servants. A high-level committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on 18 December 2024 to select the next chairman of the National Human Rights Commission. Earlier, there was talk of former CJI DY Chandrachud for the chairman of NHRC. However, Justice Chandrachud had rejected these reports.


V. Ramasubramanian was born on 30 June 1958. He took a graduate degree in Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission, Vivekananda College, Chennai and then studied law at Madras Law College. On 16 February 1983, he was enrolled as a member of the bar. Ramasubramanian practiced law in the Madras High Court for about 23 years. In which he worked under senior advocates K. Sarvabhouman and T.R. Worked with Mani for four years from 1983 to 1987.


Became Judge of Madras High Court on 31 July 2006 -

Ramasubramanian was appointed as Additional Judge of Madras High Court on 31 July 2006. He was appointed as a permanent judge on 9 November 2009. He was transferred on his own request to the High Court in Hyderabad for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 27 April 2016. After the division of the state and the formation of a separate High Court for the state of Andhra Pradesh, V. Ramasubramanian worked as a judge of the High Court of Telangana in Hyderabad from 1 January 2019.


Became Chief Justice of Himachal Court on 22 June 2019 -

V. Ramasubramanian took oath as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on 22 June 2019. On September 23, 2019, V. Ramasubramanian was appointed as the judge of the Supreme Court of India. From where he retired from his service.


Major decisions of V. Ramasubramanian –

-Justice Ramasubramanian in 2018 stayed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circular banning trading in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

-Justice Ramasubramanian had said in one of his decisions that the central government is not responsible for the statements made by its ministers in private capacity, but is responsible for the statements made in Parliament or state assemblies.

-Justice Ramasubramanian was part of the five-judge Constitution Bench that upheld the constitutionality of the 2016 demonetization scheme.
